Catch Reports 2010 page 1
Back in the thick of it
Essential Bait boss Mike Willmott managed to get the rods out for the first time in six months and what a session it was! Returning to his beloved Frampton for the last few days of the season he managed to bank five carp from two different swims, this included a 29lb 4oz common followed by mirrors of 20.04, 26.02, 33.06 and 34.08.
Once again the successful bait was the ever consistent Shellfish B5 and all the fish were caught at close range amongst patchy weed as the fish followed a new wind to feed on the abundant fly hatches. Yet further proof that the B5 will compete side by side with their natural food.

It just gets better and better!
That was the comment made to us by globetrotting expert and consistent catcher of big carp Merv Pennell after his recent trip to France, which yielded no fewer than three fifties! Merv’s son Rhys also got in the thick of the action with fish of 37.12, 40.08 and 47.04 whilst Merv’s big trio weighed in at 51, 54.12 and 57.04.
Merv and Rhys used a customised version of the B5 which included our Pineapple XL attractor package, which seems to be hauling an extraordinary amount of big fish to those who have used it. Top B5 bombing in every sense of the word!
B5 Mirror
We received an email with the heading ‘B5 Mirror’ from long term Essential Bait user Paul Harris from Oxfordshire and it was such a stunning picture we just had to use it. We don’t have much information other than it was caught on B5 and was over thirty pounds. That’ll do for now!
Lovely letter
No pics with this one (yet) but we’ve just had a lovely letter from Mr P Southwell from Staffs who recently used our white fluro B5 pop-ups for the first time and caught no less than three pb’s in four hours!! His previous pb stood at 25lb 10oz but in a hectic 4-hour spell he banked fish of 29.06, 29.08 and 31.10! He finished his letter by saying this: “Legendary carp baits? Absolutely” Yet another happy customer.
Early morning reward
Consistent catcher of big carp Rick Golder decided to tackle a private Surrey lake and was rewarded with this immaculate 39lb 1oz mirror during the small hours of the morning. This was one of Rick’s target fish for the year so you can imagine how pleased he was when the torchlight revealed his prize.
Rick used his favourite B5 boilies to bank the big mirror and he also lost another big fish just before catching this one. Whilst compiling this catch report we’ve just received another message from Rick to say he’s been back out again, but this time to a different venue, to bank three more carp to 32lb 2oz. As you would expect, Shellfish B5 doing the business again!
Consistent success
Eddie Johnson from North Wales has been making his 550-mile round trips to the Essex Manor worthwhile with a consistent amount of big fish. Some of you might remember that long distance carper Eddie banked the Fat Lady last year at 55lb 3oz so he’s no stranger to big carp.
Eddie’s recent trips have yielded some cracking carp, including specimens of 38lb 3oz, 37lb 2oz, 33lb 6oz, 29lb and 24lb. As with the fat Lady, he’s recent run of big fish have once again fallen to the ever consistent Shellfish B5. We really can’t give this guy enough credit for the amount of effort he puts into his fishing when you consider the amount of miles he clocks up. A top bloke and a top angler who deserves all the success he gets. Well done Eddie, top B5 bombing – again!!
Forty before work!
Rick Golder has been back in the action once again! This time a quick overnighter before work on a weed infested Surrey gravel pit produced this hard fighting 41lb 6oz mirror that took Rick over 20-mins to bank after it buried itself in a massive weed bed.
Rick has been trickling in small amounts of 16mm and 20mm B5 boilies on and off for the past few weeks, but as anyone who’s used it will tell you, once the big fish get a taste of it, they rarely seem to eat anything else! By the time Rick got his rigs into position and a kilo of B5 spread over the area, he knew the chances of landing one of the big residents before he left the lake was almost inevitable – he wasn’t wrong! Confidence in a bag springs to mind!
Perseverance pays off for Paddy
We absolutely love this story of success. We recently had a call from Paddy Knapper from Stoke on Trent who had packed in carp fishing some 9-years ago, but in 2009 he got the ‘bug’ back again. He wanted to target a big common from a local lake and decided to have a go for it. After reading about the track record the B5 has got for nailing the bigger fish he decided to purchase some in his quest to catch his target fish. After catching several of the lake’s residents he then suffered the heartache of losing the big common just half an hour after setting up but his bad luck didn’t end there. Disaster struck again some time later when he had his garage broken into and all his gear stolen!
However, this wasn’t going to deter him and he eventually managed to get his new kit sorted out ready for the summer and on July 20th he awoke early to find fish bubbling all over his baited area but unfortunately had to leave for work. However, before leaving he topped up the swim with 2.5kg of 16mm B5’s. He returned 48 hours later for an overnighter between work and had a 19lb mirror at first light. Just one hour later he was doing battle once again, but this time it was a much bigger fish!
After a spirited fight the big fish eventually succumbed to Paddy’s waiting net, and yes, it was the big common at a weight of 41lbs exactly! Well done that man and what a great story of perseverance. Paddy left us with this comment: “I have decided to pursue a new target fish and I shall be confidently using the B5 to do it all again” Well we don’t think anyone can blame you for that Paddy!
B5 banks another elusive forty!
Long term Essential Bait user Andy Clark from Glos recently visited a local gravel pit for an overnight session before work and his commitment was rewarded handsomely when he caught this fantastic 43lb mirror.
The big mirror hadn’t visited the bank for a couple of years but like most big carp up and down the country, it just couldn’t resist the temptation of picking up a B5 boilie! Andy caught the big elusive mirror at about 80-yards range on a gravel clearing close to an island snag where he introduced a kilo of 16mm B5 frozen boilies. He then packed up and went to work a very happy man!!
