B5 blitz on Linear St Johns!

Posted in Catch Reports on 10th July 2012

This has to be one of the best catch reports of 2012 and just goes to prove how much of an advantage a high quality food bait will give you on a busy circuit water.

Ben Thompson from Taunton recently visited St Johns lake on the Linear complex and completely smashed it to pieces with an incredible 44-fish haul - and if that wasn't enough, Ben also managed to bank a new lake record common in the shape of this stunning 43lb 15oz specimen known as 'The Box Common'! The impressive tally included twenty fish over 20lbs, including this cracking 36lb 15oz mirror (pictured below).

Ben presented his B5 pop-up rigs over Shellfish B5 16mm freezer boilies fished to clear patches amongst weed and varying ranges and topped up the spots with 100-freebies between each capture. Well done Ben from all at Essential. That's an incredible session and puts you in pole position for our 'Top Catch' competition.

Fluoro pop-ups

Whilst carp are not generally recognised as sight feeders, there are undoubtedly times when they are visually drawn to a food source and bright pop-ups are a classic example of this. It's not surprising therefore, that fluoro pop-ups have proved very effective, particularly if just using a single bait with no free offerings. The winter and spring months are a classic example of this and a single fluoro pop-up cast to a 'showing' fish has resulted in the downfall of many a carp.

But it would be a mistake to think fluoro pop-ups should be just restricted to single bait presentation. Quite often, a fluoro pop-up fished over a bed of bait can fool the wariest of carp and a little 10mm fluoro pop-up mounted above a standard bottom bait can act as a very good visual sight and lead to a bite or two when other methods fail to produce.
