August - a bitter sweet month...
Posted in Mike’s Diary on 26th August 2010August has been a bitter sweet month for me. I sadly lost an old friend in Keith Crispin and I have paid my respects to Keith in Carpworld and Carp-Talk. He was a top bloke and a gifted angler who will be sadly missed by many. My heartfelt thoughts go out to Keith’s family and friends.
A couple of weeks later came the terrible Mere fish kill. I had to get down there to see the carnage myself and what an awful sight it was. Dead fish everywhere resulting from a severe algae crash killing virtually everything in there. It was a truly awful sight. RIP Black Mirror and all that lived in such a remarkable venue.
Here’s one for you though. Guess who managed to collect eggs from the Mere fish a few years ago and has successfully reared them on? They’re proper ‘lookers’ as well. Wouldn’t it be nice to restore nature’s balance one day by stocking those brothers and sisters back into the lake for a future generation? Ownership consent and Section 30 willing of course!
Advantages of Liquid Foods

Liquid food additives are undoubtedly an important part of the carp angers bait armoury. Their main function is to boost food signals in and around your baited rig or your baited area. Stick Mixes or groundbaits can simply be mixed together with water, but by adding a liquid food as well, you will be increasing the food signals coming from the bait, which in turn is far more likely to lead to a quicker rate of investigation and more frenzied fish activity.
Coating pellets with a Liquid Food will disperse quicker/better messages of food than pellets used on their own, and a single Pop-Up launched in the middle of nowhere will undoubtedly benefit from boosting the attraction properties with a Liquid Food. They can be particularly beneficial for short session use when you need to maximise attraction in the minimum amount of time. They are also beneficial for coldwater use when we need to send extra messages of food through the water column in an attempt to arouse those otherwise lethargic carp. Ignore them at your peril!
