Best Man for Boris...

Posted in Mike’s Diary on 01st September 2010

At the end the month I was honoured to be the best man at my long standing mate’s wedding as he (Boris) finally tied the knot with Lucy. I must say it was one of the most elaborate and best wedding’s I’ve ever been to. Huge marquees, cocktail bars, pig roasts, live bands and hundreds of good friends all gathered together to create a brilliant party atmosphere. It really was a top bash so well done guys and have a great life together.

So as you can see from the above, my fishing time in August has been seriously curtailed! I never managed to get back to Dinton but I’m hoping to get back there soon. In between funerals, weddings and fish kills I did somehow manage to squeeze in a few nights on my Glos syndicate water during which time I managed to bag a couple of mint conditioned 20lb plus commons.

However, top honours once again go to Lee who extended his run of fish from the tricky venue to nine on the bounce! Believe me, that really takes some doing on there, in fact it’s what you would normally catch in whole season on there, so to catch them in just a handful of nights is some achievement. His latest success came in the shape of one of the rarest and most sought after carp in the lake, an absolutely stunning linear that went 33lb 8oz – what a fish and well done again Lee – top bombing and what a lovely way to end a hectic month!

Balanced Dumbells

There are definitely times when standard round hook baits can lose their effectiveness and a switch to a different shape can often produce the goods. These pellet shaped hook baits offer a viable alternative to standard round hook baits and when mounted on a slightly longer hair and fished over a bed of pellets, they can often make the difference between success and failure!

Their shape not only makes them very difficult for the fish to eject, but coupled with their added buoyancy due to the inclusion of cork dust, they are also superb for fishing over the top of silt or weed. They are also very durable and will last for many hours without being nibbled away by nuisance fish, Crayfish or diving birds. Definitely worth considering when the going gets tough!

Top tip

Try mounting the dumbell on the hair long-ways. This will enter the carp's mouth easier, but will spin around on ejection thus making it more difficult for the carp to eject the hook.
