Happy New Year Everyone...

Posted in Mike’s Diary on 02nd January 2014

First of all I would like to wish everybody a happy new year. Massive thanks for all your support throughout the past 12-months and I wish you all good health and happiness for 2014. Secondly I would like to personally thank my sponsors for their continued support throughout the year, so a big thank you goes out to Dymag Specialist Tackle, Gardner Tackle and Daiwa.

Well back to fishing and 2013 will go down as one of my most memorable years and it just seemed to get better and better as the year went on! I started the year off with a stunning twenty pound mirror caught in thick snow before following it up with my first ever snow caught thirty, which has always been one of my long term ambitions.

Not long after this I managed to bank a new lake record mirror of 37lb 2oz, shortly followed by a lake record common of 32lbs. I then had a lovely trip to the Czech Republic and caught a very special fish from an even more special lake! It was then time to make a return to one of my non-publicity syndicate venues that I hadn’t fished for a few years and on my first night back landed 4 fish topped by one of my target fish, a stunning 35lb 4oz fully scaled mirror!

This heralded the start of an extremely successful campaign on the venue with several other thirty-pound plus fish landed, culminating in a magnificent 48lb 12oz mirror in the middle of December! This was not only a winter pb for me, but the first December fish caught fish from the notoriously difficult winter venue for 7-years! But if that wasn’t enough, I managed to bank a couple more stunning winter thirties before the month ended and I was in dreamland!

It was so nice to get back into my fishing after such a long break, during which time we finally succeeded against all odds against the local planning authority and built the new house before moving home. It was a stressful few years but well worth the wait and 2013 paid me back big style! During all this time the bait has been flying out with our customers reporting numerous lake records and personal bests from up and down the country and throughout Europe. Then there was the release of our 'Top B5 Bombing' clothing! It’s been a hectic year for sure, but I wouldn’t want it any other way!

So what more can I say? In between all those magical moments I’ve had plenty of good socials with friends and family alike, and it’s on that very note that I will end this latest diary piece. Thanks to all my friends, family and customers for their valued support and friendship throughout the year.

Balanced Dumbells

There are definitely times when standard round hook baits can lose their effectiveness and a switch to a different shape can often produce the goods. These pellet shaped hook baits offer a viable alternative to standard round hook baits and when mounted on a slightly longer hair and fished over a bed of pellets, they can often make the difference between success and failure!

Their shape not only makes them very difficult for the fish to eject, but coupled with their added buoyancy due to the inclusion of cork dust, they are also superb for fishing over the top of silt or weed. They are also very durable and will last for many hours without being nibbled away by nuisance fish, Crayfish or diving birds. Definitely worth considering when the going gets tough!

Top tip

Try mounting the dumbell on the hair long-ways. This will enter the carp's mouth easier, but will spin around on ejection thus making it more difficult for the carp to eject the hook.
